Did you know that Americans drink roughly three cups of coffee per person every day — and that this is a really good thing because coffee promotes hearth health and helps reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes? Yep. Coffee is a health drink.

Although most people focus on the energizing effects of coffee or coffee’s role in socializing today, there is a fairly long list of health benefits in drinking coffee that shouldn’t be overlooked.

From heart health to liver health to a reduction in risks relating to Parkinson’s disease and diabetes, coffee has been found to promote good health.

Coffee is less talked about in terms of its health benefits than some super foods like kale and quinoa, but maybe that is a good thing. It’s easier to maintain healthy habits when we pursue them because we want to.

That’s exactly how most people relate to coffee. We just like it.

Our Addiction to, um, Good Health

The western hemisphere is responsible for a majority of the world’s coffee consumption and in the USA we play the role of lead coffee drinker with gusto.

Reports show that every day Americans drink “the equivalent to between two and four cups of coffee” (Medical News Today). That puts us in first place in the world. And, making good health news better, this number is rising. Our coffee consumption has gone up every year for the last five years.

Colloquially, it’s been said that Americans drink more coffee than water in a given day. It’s hard to find the data to back that up, but Marketwatch has shown that coffee sales are more than double the sales of bottled water (measured by the gallon). So, it’s not hard to believe. Maybe we do drink more coffee than water.

Those travel mugs you see people carrying around aren’t only about hydration. They’re also about making sure we’re never without our favorite health drink — coffee.

If hearing the news that coffee is a health food makes you wish you had coffee on tap in your kitchen or your office, you’re not alone.
